2013 Annual Retreat
The 2013 Redox Biology Center Annual Retreat was held in Nebraska City at the Lied Lodge and Conference Center on April 12-13, 2013. This year's retreat was hosted by RBC's Director, Dr. Donald Becker. The program included scientific presentations by students, postdoctoral associates and faculty as well as a plenary speaker and a poster session. University of Nebraska presenters are selected through the submission of abstracts.
The 2013 Keynote Speaker was Dr. Jim Imlay, Professor, Department of Microbiology, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Dr. Imlay's research focus is on Enzymology and Microbial Physiology. When asked about his research Dr. Imlay had the following to say:
"Virtually all organisms struggle to grow when they are exposed to more oxygen than pervades their native habitats, which suggests that some cell damage is likely to occur even at normoxic levels. Yet it has proven difficult to identify the molecular mechanisms of oxygen toxicity. Using mutants that are unable to scavenge superoxide and hydrogen peroxide, we have identified cell processes that these oxidants disrupt in the model bacterium Escherichia coli. These disabilities have been tracked to specific molecular injuries. In this context, we have been able to make sense of some of the defensive functions that are activated when bacteria sense heightened concentrations of oxidants. Collectively, studies such as these aim to draw a picture of the stress that organisms must contend with when they dwell in aerobic habitats."
2012 Annual Retreat
The 2012 Annual Retreat was a great success this year, despite the severe weather. Thank you to all that attended.
The 2012 Annual Retreat was held at the Lied Lodge and Conference Center Arbor Day Farm in Nebraska City, NE, April 13 - 15, 2012. Dr. Rodrigo Franco-Cruz is hosting the 2012 Annual Retreat. The program included scientific presentations by students, postdoctoral associates and faculty, plenary speaker and poster sessions. Presenters and posters are selected through the submission of abstracts.
Our Keynote Speaker is Dr. Henry Jay Forman, Professor of Biochemistry and Chemistry at the University of California, Merced.
2011 Annual Retreat
The Redox Biology Center’s Annual Retreat began at 6:30 PM on Friday, April 15, 2011 at the Lied Lodge and Conference Center Arbor Day Farm in Nebraska City, NE and ended on the morning of Sunday, April 17, 2011. The event was sponsored by the RBC to stimulate scientific interactions and an exchange of ideas and was hosted by Dr. Matthew Zimmerman in 2011. The program included scientific presentations by students, postdoctoral associates and faculty, a plenary speaker, a student social event and poster sessions. This year, we again had a poster contest for all submitted abstracts. The talks were selected from submitted abstracts.
2011's Keynote speaker was Dr. Frederick (Rick) Domann, Professor of Radiation Oncology in the Free Radical and Radiation Biology Program at the University of Iowa.
