Horsin Around 2013 – January 12 & 13, 2013 featuring Michael Colvin of Georgia

In its 21st year, UNL’s Horsin Around continues to treat the Midwest horse industry with some of the country’s elite trainers that are rarely available in the area. The 2013 edition of Horsin Around will be another rare opportunity to learn from one of the best coaches of youth and amateurs as Michael Colvin will be the feature trainer.


Michael Colvin is dedicated to creating championship horse and rider teams. His goal is to maintain a horse and rider training program that consistently produces world class results with integrity and in a positive environment with an atmosphere of respect for both the riders and horses. Using his decades of experience with horses and expert coaching skills, Michael has repeatedly taken his horses and riders to the winners circle and beyond. Michael and his outstanding team, specialize in AQHA all around events in youth, amateur and open divisions. He has recently coached several World show winners including Gillian Chant and Zippos Romeo – 2011 Youth World Show Champions in Trail and Hunt Seat Equitation.


Michael Colvin is originally from Claremore, OK and has been in the Atlanta area since 1988. He has been training professionally since he was sixteen years old and has several AQHA National, International and World Championships and numerous riders who have done the same. He has been extensively involved internationally, particularly with the Italian Quarter Horse Association and conducts clinics throughout Europe. Michael is an AQHA Professional Horseman and holds an AQHA and NSBA judges card.


Michael specializes in all around horses and during the two days of Horsin Around he will share his methods in a variety of areas including Showmanship, Trail, Horsemanship, and English Equitation. The two day conference will be held in the RB Warren arena in UNL’s Animal Science complex on East Campus and will run from 9 – 4:30 each day. The clinic is open to participants of all ages. Adult registration is $30 for the weekend or $20 for one day. For youth 18 and under, registration is $20 for both days and $15 for one. If the clinic doesn't sell out, adult registration will be available at the door for $40 for the weekend and $25 for one day. Youth registration at the door will be $30 for the weekend and $20 for one day. Seating will be assigned by section on a first-come, first-served basis.

Michael Colvin Headlines UNL's Annual Horsin' Around Conference Jan. 12-13

LINCOLN, Neb. — Michael Colvin, a professional horse trainer in the Atlanta area since 1988, will be the 2013 featured presenter during the annual Horsin' Around conference Jan. 12-13 in the RB Warren Arena at the Animal Science Complex on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's East Campus.

Colvin is dedicated to creating championship teams with a goal to maintain a horse and rider trainer program that consistently produces world class results with integrity, said Kathy Anderson, UNL Extension horse specialist.

"He maintains a positive environment with an atmosphere of respect for both the riders and horses," she said. "With his decades of experience, he has repeatedly taken his horses and riders to the winner's circle and beyond."

Colvin and his team specialize in the American Quarter Horse Association's all around events in youth, amateur and open divisions.

Originally from Claremore, Okla., he has been training professionally since he was 16. In addition, he has been extensively involved internationally, particularly with the Italian Quarter Horse Association, and conducts clinics throughout Europe.

He is an AQHA Professional Horseman and holds AQHA and NSBA judges' cards.

Colvin will touch on topics that include: Does this horse fit your goals?, sharpening your horse for horsemanship and/or equitation, developing the foundation – riding drills for all riders, western horsemanship, English equitation, raising your showmanship score, trail and tackling lead challenges.

Other speakers during the two-day event include Kathy Anderson, UNL Extension horse specialist, and Lena Cottle, UNL Extension equine specialist.

Anderson has been at UNL since 1991 and teaches equine related courses including Equine Reproduction, Equine Nutrition, Horse Management, Horse Evaluation and Horse Industry Study Tour, all in UNL's animal science department. She also is the coach for the UNL Horse Judging Team.

At the conference, she will discuss the Nebraska Horse Welfare Coalition.

Cottle oversees and develops horse-related youth extension and outreach at UNL. She is responsible for the 4-H Horse Stampede, district and state 4-H horse shows, 4-H horse show judges' clinics and other youth-related activities. She also teaches equine courses in UNL's animal science department.

During Horsin' Around, she will discuss new happenings with the 4-H Horse Project.

The conference begins at 9 a.m. both days and is open to participants of all ages. Adult registration is $30 for both days or $20 for one day. For youth 18 and under, cost is $25 for both days or $20 for one. If the clinic doesn't sell out, registration will be available at the door for adults at $40 for both days and $25 for one day and for youth at $30 for both days and $20 for one day.
