Counselor Job Description (Jr./Sr)
Position: Counselor
Salary: First Year: Volunteer, Camp Will Provide Room and Board
After First Year: $25/day (there is no annual pay increase) Skill Additions: $5/day -- Lifeguard
Time Commitment: Minimum three days over the summer, available for service 24 hours a day while with cabin. Will be asked to work dates that have been assigned
Qualifications:
1. Must be at least 15 years of age on or before June 1, 2012
2. Desire and ability to work with children and adults in camp setting
3. Ability to plan, lead, and teach games.
4. Ability to work cooperatively with other staff in a team-oriented environment
5. Ability to relate to one’s peer group
6. Good character, integrity, adaptability, enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self control
7. Ability to provide guidance and supervision.
8. Ability to accept supervision and guidance.
Responsible To: Cabin Director, Program Assistant and Program Director
General and Specific Responsibilities:
1. Create and contribute to a healthy, safe, and positive educational atmosphere which meets the needs of campers.
a. Carry out established roles in enforcing camp safety rules and supervising camper health
b. Abide by the 4-H Camp Code of Conduct and the rules and regulations in the:
1. Operations and Program Handbook
2. Health Care Handbook
c. Set a positive example for campers and others including cleanliness, punctuality, manners, sportsmanship, etc.
d. Help each participant meet the 4-H camping program goals
2. To identify and meet camper needs.
a. Learn the likes/dislikes of each camper.
b. Assist those camper and staff who may need help fitting into camp atmosphere
c. Recognize and respond to opportunities for problem solving in the group.
d. Develop opportunities for interaction between campers and staff.
e. Provide opportunities for interaction between campers and staff.
f. Provide opportunities for discussion of individual or group problems or concerns.
g. Help each participant meet the goals established by the camp for camper development.
3. To supervise campers
a. Ensure that campers wake on time know and communicate proper attire for the day and activity.
b. Conduct or delegate responsibility for inspection of cabins and areas.
c. Help campers plan their participation in unit-wide or camp-wide programs, special events, and activities.
d. Assist in teaching or leading an activity, as assigned.
e. Instruct campers in emergency procedures such as fire drills, evacuating the cabin, etc.
f. Carry out established roles for supervising camper health.
g. Carry out established roles in enforcing camp safety.
h. Supervise all assigned aspects of the campers’ day including morning reveille, cabin clean-up, meal times, rest hour, evening activities, getting ready for bed , and after-hours duty as assigned.
i. Be knowledgeable about the eating habits and diets of campers.
j. Inform cabin director of any camper problems
4. To fulfill other staff administrative roles.
a. Prepare for and actively participate in training, meetings, and supervisory conferences.
b. Set a good example for campers and others including cleanliness, punctuality, sharing clean-up and chores, sportsmanship, and table manners
c. Follow camp rules and regulation pertaining to smoking, use of alcoholic beverages, and use of drugs.
d. Encourage respect for personal property, camp equipment, and facilities.
5. These are not the only duties to be performed. Some duties may be reassigned and other duties may be assigned as required.
Essential Functions:
1. Ability to communicate and work with groups of different age and skill levels, and provide necessary instruction to campers
2. Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior management techniques
3. Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to camp activities
4. Physical strength and ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid, spot and belay participants, lift/load canoes, and maintain constant supervision of campers
5. Cognitive and communicative abilities to plan and conduct activities to achieve 4-H Camp Program goals
