2013 National 4-H Week, October 6-12, 2013
(October 6, 2013) -- More than 6 million young people across the country today will be celebrating National 4-H Week, which takes place annually during the first full week of October. Nebraska 4-H leverages National 4-H Week to celebrate the great things that the 4-H youth development program offers young people and highlights the incredible 4-H young people who each day work to a make a positive impact on their community.
Local county National 4-H Week Celebrations will be taking place this week and throughout the month of October. A special 2013 Wear a 4-H Shirt Facebook/Twitter Challenge is open to participants across the state. Also, during National 4-H Week, hundreds of thousands of youth from all around the nation will complete a single, innovative experiment on 4-H National Youth Science Day, which will be held on Wednesday, October 9. The 2013 National Science Experiment, 4-H Maps & Apps, will introduce youth to the importance of geographic information systems (GIS) and geographic positioning systems (GPS) as they design and map their ideal park, use mapping to solve community problems and contribute data to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) The National Map program as citizen scientists through The National Map Corps project.
4-H, the largest youth development organization in the world, is a community of seven million young people across the globe learning leadership, citizenship, and life skills. In the U.S., 4-H programs are implemented by the 109 land grant universities and the Cooperative Extension System through their 3,100 local Extension offices across the country. Overseas, 4-H programs operate throughout more than 50 countries.
4-H National Youth Science Day
(October 6, 2013) On Wednesday, October 9, 2013, millions of young people across the nation will become scientists for the day during the sixth annual 4-H National Youth Science Day (NYSD)! The sixth annual 4-H National Youth Science Day will focus on 4-H Maps & Apps. The 4-H National Youth Science Day (NYSD) is the premiere national rallying event for year-round 4-H Science programming, bringing together youth, volunteers, and educators from the nation's 102 land-grand colleges and universities and the Cooperative Extension System, to simultaneously complete the National Science Experiment. There's no place like the Nebraska State Fair! It's the premier showcase for 4-H'ers to share what they've learned and worked on in 4-H throughout the year. At the Fair, we celebrate the successes of thousands of kids who've learned and grown through 4-H.
The Nebraska State Fair is also a prime opportunity for 4-H'ers to cultivate skills they've learned in 4-H projects, put their life skills and good character to work, discover areas they'd like to learn more about, and to meet other kids and adults.
The 2013 Nebraska State Fair will be held August 23 - September 2, 2013, at the Nebraska State Fairgrounds in Grand Island, Nebraska. Check out the complete Schedule of 4-H Events at the Nebraska State Fair; it will be updated throughout the summer.
And, numerous Nebraska State Fair 4-H Resources (fairbook, scoresheets, schedules, maps, etc.) are available to help prepare 4-H participants for the Nebraska State Fair events.

4-H'er Develops Prairie Chicken Habitat
(July 22, 2013) A Custer County 4-H member is taking advantage of an unsused section of land by turning it into habitat for prairie chickens. Russell McMillan, age 13, will be an eighth-grader in the fall at Anselmo-Merna.
He has been working on the project for three years and placed first in two junior division competitions in 2011 and 2012. "When my parents purchased some land I was then able to try a wildlife project," McMilan said.
With the help of his family, McMilan has cut down scattered trees that harbotred predator birds on his 52-acre plot. Read more.
Governor's Awards go to 25 4-H Clubs
(July 1, 2013) The Governor's Agricultural Excellence Awards, created in 1996 and sponsored by the Nebraska Investment Finance Authority, were presented to 25 4-H clubs during the PASE/Life Challenge Event at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln July 1.
The award is designed to recognize accomplishments of the members of a 4-H Club based on community projects, service learning and collective individual accomplishments in agriculture-related project areas. After a review of their proposal, the successful clubs each received a $500 stipend to fund their projects. No state tax dollars were used in the program. Read more.

Nebraska 4-H County Fairs to Feature Commodity Carnivals
(July 16, 2013) 4-H Commodity Carnivals will take place throughout Nebraska this summer at county fairs. The carnivals are the result of a gift from the Chicago Mercantile Exchange Group. The goal of the partnership program is to increase the public’s understanding of the value of agriculture and increase agriculture literacy across the nation.
The new initiative, which will include an interactive learning activity, will debut at county and state fairs in 11 states, including Nebraska. The Commodity Carnival will consist of two hands-on mini carnival games – Invest and Grow and Pig-Linko – to introduce the concepts of agriculture futures, options and commodity trading to the target audience of families and youth ages 8-14.
